BAROLO

The first thing you notice about Barolo is the position of the town centre that is different from the surrounding villages found on the hill tops or crests.

The town is actually in a type of high valley surrounded by the protecting hillsides so it seems like an amphitheatre. There is no sure explanation for the origins of Barolo. Perhaps the most endorsed explanation for the etymology of the word Barolo comes from the Celtic 'bas reul' which means 'low place'. In 1200 the village was mentioned in "Rigestum Comunis Albe" by the name of Villa Barogly, while in 1600 it took the form of Barrolo and Barollo.
